The Department of Foreign Languages at The Institute of
Technology in Ýzmir provides
instruction in English for students following a preparatory
year. This year of intensive instruction in productive
(speaking and writing) and receptive (reading and listening)
skills is designed to enable students to better pursue their
academic studies on moving to enage in further study within
their chosen faculty at the main campus. Each of the four
language skills taught are assessed on a regular basis:
fortnightly quizzes relating to main course study are
implemented; monthly examinations take place throughout the
year; one of the monthly exams assesses skills only, while
one other such exam is based solely on speaking skills.
Great emphasis is given to ensuring students in the
Department of Foreign Languages are capable in forthcoming
years of pursuing higher study with such complete confidence
that they will be able to work independently in their chosen
academic field with speakers around the world who share
similar goals and will be able to pursue these goals using
English as a second language.
